How can you participate in SSEC?

• Join SSEC through the National Council for the Social Studies.
  Visit www.socialstudies.org/membership/join to download a printable membership application.  Be sure to check the SSEC box under "Join an NCSS Associated Group."

• Attend the SSEC Vital Issues session at the annual meeting of the National Council for the Social Studies.  Each year the SSEC sponsors a session that addresses a critical civic issue from a social science perspective.

• Participate in the SSEC annual meeting.  Annual meetings, which are held every summer, bring together the membership and other interested educators to explore the latest research and best practices in social science education.  Recent meetings have been held in Prague, Czech Republic, and at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC.

• Bring your grant project ideas to SSEC.  If you have a good idea for a social science/social studies funded project, please bring them to our attention.  The SSEC can become a host for good projects that can improve our profession.

Each year, the SSEC sponsors a Vital Issues Session at the annual meeting of the National Council for the Social Studies.  In 2009, the title of the Vital Issues session was “Examining the Myths of High School Social Studies:  Results from a National Random Survey.”  The session chair was Jim Leming, and panelists were David Dieterle, Lucien Ellington, and Mark Schug.  You may view the Power Point of this session by CLICKING HERE.  To obtain the entire report in PDF format, CLICK HERE. 

Beginning in 2010, the title of the Vital Issues Session will be called The Jean Fair Symposium, in honor of past NCSS president Jean Fair, who made a significant bequest to the SSEC.
